Background Gallery is a traveling, parasitic exhibition space that welcomes everyone—no applications, motivation letters, or CVs required. It operates as a gallery within a gallery, hosting solo or group exhibitions and redistributing the privilege of space to as many participants as possible without conditions.
Its model challenges conventional gatekeeping in the art world by creating open, accessible exhibition opportunities inside existing art spaces.
The gallery’s first appearance took place in Poznań in 2023 as part of the Monu-mental Background exhibition at Nowa Scena UAP. There, Backroom Gallery hosted two solo shows within its own space, nested inside the main exhibition.
